Didactic Training on Toxidrome Recognition, Life-Saving Medical Care in Hazmat/Chemical Weapons Environments, and Decontamination Strategies (Wet and Dry)
This session provides a comprehensive overview of tactical medical management in hazardous materials (Hazmat) and CBRNE environments. Participants will explore the principles of triage under the SALT system, the recognition of chemical weapon toxidromes, and the clinical limitations encountered while operating in personal protective equipment (PPE). The course emphasizes how to maintain patient care effectiveness despite reduced mobility, visibility, and dexterity in Level B and C suits. Practical aspects of patient movement across Hot, Warm, and Cold zones are discussed, along with decision-making on equipment changes and decontamination needs. A key focus is the comparison between wet and dry decontamination, including evidence-based procedures from the PRISM study and real-world application in mass-casualty chemical incidents. Through this integrated approach, the session aims to strengthen clinicians’ understanding of operational safety, contamination control, and medical priorities in chemical or radiological emergencies, preparing responders to deliver life-saving care while maintaining PPE integrity.
